President Mahama Announces Commencement Of Kumasi Bypass Under $10 Billion ‘Big Push’ Agenda

President John Dramani Mahama has announced the imminent commencement of the Greater Kumasi Bypass, a transformative road infrastructure project aimed at decongesting the Ashanti Region’s capital and enhancing regional mobility.

The bypass forms a key component of the government’s ambitious $10 billion Big Push initiative, which seeks to address Ghana’s annual infrastructure deficit estimated at $1.5 billion.

Speaking during his Thank You Tour in Kumasi on July 16, 2025, President Mahama emphasized the strategic importance of the bypass in redirecting heavy vehicular traffic away from the city center.

“Under the Big Push, we are going to commence the construction of what we call the Greater Kumasi Bypass,” he stated. “This will help decongest the city, promote safer travel, and restore Kumasi’s urban integrity”.

The first quadrant of the bypass will run through Ejisu, linking the Mampong-Techiman corridor, thereby offering an alternative route for cargo trucks heading to Burkina Faso and Mali.

This diversion is expected to. Reduce travel time and fuel costs, Minimize road wear and tear within Kumasi, Improve air quality and pedestrian safety and Boost regional trade and logistics efficiency

The bypass will complement other ongoing projects in the region, including the Suame Interchange, Kejetia Market Phase Two and the Boankra Inland Port, all of which are being revived under the Big Push framework.

The Big Push initiative is backed by petroleum revenues and mineral royalties, with $2 billion allocated annually over five years. President Mahama has assured the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) that these funds will be disbursed transparently and efficiently.

“This will prioritise strategic infrastructure to unlock national productivity,” Mahama affirmed during his engagement with constituents at Kumasi Jubilee Park.

The Greater Kumasi Bypass is more than a road, it’s a statement of intent. It reflects a broader vision to modernize Ghana’s urban centers, reduce congestion, and create infrastructure that supports economic growth and environmental sustainability.

As sod-cutting preparations begin, residents and stakeholders are hopeful that the bypass will not only ease traffic but also signal a new era of infrastructure delivery driven by accountability, ambition, and impact.
