The Executive Secretary of the National Media Commission (NMC), George Sarpong, has given a glowing endorsement of Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, rating his first term “beyond 90%” and throwing his full support behind Dwumfour’s bid for a second term.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Atinka TV’s Ebenezer Madugu, Mr. Sarpong praised the GJA president for fostering unity within the association and the broader media industry.
“I would rate this executive beyond 90%. I have been deeply impressed with the work that they have done,” Sarpong said. “There’s a unity he has brought into the executive, and the unity he is building within the association is equally commendable.”
According to Sarpong, one of Dwumfour’s standout achievements is his ability to forge stronger ties between the GJA and key media stakeholders, including the NMC, Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), and emerging associations representing online journalists.
“He quickly brought them into the coalition,” Sarpong noted, referring to Dwumfour’s inclusive leadership style. “Recent GJA statements on matters of national interest, journalist safety, and media development have been issued in collaboration with these diverse groups. That’s a testament to visionary leadership.”
The NMC secretary also lauded Dwumfour’s responsiveness to the evolving media landscape, particularly his outreach to digital and online journalism communities, which have often operated on the periphery of traditional media frameworks.
“In my view, he’s brought a new association that came up very brilliantly for online journalists,” Sarpong observed. “These are very positive things that we need to look at and then give him the mandate to continue.”
While acknowledging that others may also be capable of leading the GJA in the future, Sarpong was clear in his immediate preference: “When the time comes and anybody else is ready to serve the association, we will give them our support. But for now, it seems to me that we would be doing a disservice if we did not support Dwumfour.”
As the GJA approaches its next round of leadership elections, this high-profile endorsement from a key figure in Ghana’s media regulatory landscape could be a major boost to Dwumfour’s campaign.
