National Communications Authority Suspends Operations Of Wontumi Radio, 6 Others

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Communications Authority (NCA) has reaffirmed the regulator’s resolve to act decisively in safeguarding national interest and promoting responsible journalism in Ghana.

In a statement following the suspension of operations of some radio stations across the country, the NCA boss stressed that the move was necessary to ensure compliance with broadcasting regulations.

“We shall continue to take decisive action in the interest of our country and responsible journalism that respects the terms of the frequency authorisation. For God and Country.”

The announcement comes after the Authority took regulatory measures against several broadcasters for alleged violations of their frequency authorisation terms, including failure to renew licenses and non-compliance with technical specifications.

While the NCA did not immediately disclose all the affected stations in its initial communication, the decision has sparked public debate on the balance between media freedom and regulatory enforcement.

Supporters argue that the regulator is upholding standards, while critics fear it could be used to stifle dissent.

Reacting to the development, Ningo-Prampram MP Hon. Sam Nartey George acknowledged the statement, linking it to broader conversations about responsible journalism and the need for transparency in how such regulatory actions are taken.

Sam George has, in previous public statements, maintained that while freedom of the press must be protected, media houses are equally bound by the law to operate within the terms of their licenses.

He has argued that unregulated or non-compliant broadcasting not only undermines professional journalism but can also pose a threat to national security and social harmony.

The suspension adds to a series of enforcement actions in recent months aimed at ensuring broadcasters operate within the legal and technical frameworks set by the NCA, reinforcing the Authority’s stance that broadcasting is a privilege bound by law, not an unchecked right.
