Majesty Groupe has officially launched a new electric vehicle (EV) brand, Cowrie, in Shanghai, marking a significant step toward expanding clean mobility solutions across Ghana and the wider African subregion.

The launch, which brought together industry leaders and Chinese executives from several publicly listed companies, signals Majesty Groupe’s strategic entry into the fast-growing global EV market, with a clear focus on Africa’s emerging demand.

Founder of Majesty Groupe, Dr. Jerry Darwin, said the brand name Cowrie was deliberately chosen to reflect Africa’s rich heritage and economic history.

Cowrie shells were widely used as currency across parts of Africa centuries ago, symbolizing trade, value, and connectivity.

“The name Cowrie resonates deeply with Africa’s identity and economic roots. It represents value, trade, and a new era of mobility for the continent,” he stated.

The launch in Shanghai positions Majesty Groupe to leverage China’s advanced EV manufacturing ecosystem while tailoring products for African conditions. Ghana is expected to serve as a key entry point for the brand, with expansion plans across West Africa and beyond.

According to Dr. Darwin, Africa’s demographic advantage presents a strong market opportunity. Over 60% of Africa’s population is under the age of 25, making it the youngest continent globally.

This growing youth population, combined with increasing urbanization and a rising middle class, creates a favorable environment for EV adoption.

“Africa, with its youthful and dynamic population, is a ready market for electric vehicles. Young professionals are increasingly seeking innovative, sustainable, and lifestyle-driven mobility solutions,” he said.

As part of its rollout strategy, Majesty Groupe announced plans to establish EV charging infrastructure in selected locations across Ghana. This is expected to address one of the major barriers to EV adoption on the continent—limited charging networks.

In addition, the company intends to invest in human capital development by partnering with universities and technical institutions.

“We are poised to engage Ghanaian youth across various universities, mentor them, and prepare them to drive this initiative,” Dr. Darwin noted.

The initiative is expected to create sustainable employment opportunities, facilitate technology transfer from China to Ghana, build local expertise in EV maintenance and innovation, and contribute to Ghana’s industrialization agenda.

The introduction of the Cowrie EV brand aligns with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. The transport sector accounts for a significant portion of carbon emissions worldwide, and Ghana is no exception, with urban air pollution becoming an increasing concern.

Electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions, making them a cleaner alternative to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. Consequently, scaling EV adoption in Ghana could significantly reduce urban pollution levels while lowering fuel import costs over time.

Globally, EV adoption is accelerating. According to the International Energy Agency, electric car sales surpassed 14 million units in 2023, accounting for about 18% of total global car sales. China remains the largest EV market, making Shanghai a strategic location for the Cowrie launch.

In Africa, while EV adoption is still in its early stages, countries like Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa are beginning to explore policy frameworks and incentives to support the transition to clean energy vehicles.

Majesty Groupe’s approach, combining manufacturing partnerships, infrastructure development, and youth empowerment reflects a long-term vision for sustainable mobility on the continent.

As Ghana continues to explore green energy solutions and industrial transformation, initiatives like Cowrie could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of transportation while creating jobs and driving economic growth.
