GIS officer handed over to police for alleged smuggling of 2,600 AK-47 ammunition

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has handed over one of its officers, Assistant Immigration Control Officer I (AICO I) Ahmed Abdul Samad, to the Upper East Regional Police Command for investigations into his alleged involvement in the smuggling of 2,600 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition intended for Paga.

The alleged smuggling operation came to light following the interception of the ammunition on 26 December 2025 by police officers stationed at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier in the Ashanti Region.

According to police sources, the ammunition was discovered during a routine stop-and-search exercise on an OA-bound bus traveling to Paga. A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered 2,600 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition concealed alongside two bullet-proof plates, a black helmet and a pair of tactical boots.

Subsequent investigations by security agencies led to the identification of Ahmed Abdul Samad, a native of Nalerigu and an officer stationed at the Ghana Immigration Service Paga Sector Command, as a key suspect in the case.

He was arrested by the Ghana Immigration Service and officially handed over to the Ghana Police Service on 2 January 2026 to assist with further investigations.

Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged smuggling attempt and to identify any possible accomplices connected to the case.
