Ghana has secured a 0% tariff agreement on all exports to China following high-level bilateral talks between Ghana’s Foreign Minister and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the ongoing China-Africa Summit in Changsha.
China, already Ghana’s largest trading partner with trade volumes exceeding US$11 billion in the past year, has now extended a 0% tariff on 100% of goods exported from Ghana.
This unprecedented development is expected to significantly boost Ghana’s export sector, enhance trade flows, create jobs, and stimulate entrepreneurial growth across the country.
“This is not just a trade win it’s a victory for every Ghanaian farmer, manufacturer and entrepreneur,” the Foreign Minister said. “This agreement will unlock our export potential, increase market access, and ultimately improve livelihoods.”
The bilateral discussions also laid the groundwork for transformative industrial collaborations aligned with President John Mahama’s vision of economic transformation.
Plans were discussed for the development of an integrated aluminium industry based on Ghana’s bauxite reserves, supported by modern rail infrastructure to ensure efficient movement of raw and processed materials.
In a forward-looking initiative, both nations also agreed to explore the establishment of an electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Ghana, leveraging the country’s strategic lithium deposits. This initiative positions Ghana at the forefront of Africa’s green industrial revolution.
A Special Economic Partnership Agreement between Ghana and China is expected to be signed soon, formalising this strengthened alliance and setting the stage for long-term economic cooperation.
Reflecting on the historic ties between the two nations, the Foreign Minister remarked, “Kwame Nkrumah and Chairman Mao would be proud of what we have achieved today.
Sixty-five years since they forged the foundation of Ghana-China relations, we are building on their legacy with a partnership that delivers real, transformative progress.”
The Ministry reaffirmed the Mahama administration’s commitment to using diplomacy as a powerful tool for national development, bringing strategic investments and innovation to Ghana’s doorstep.
