Ghana Immigration Service Cracks Down On Migrant Beggars In Accra.

In a bold move to curb the rising trend of unauthorized migrant beggars in Accra, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has launched a major operation at the Abossey Okai Roundabout, resulting in the detention of several individuals believed to be in the country illegally.

The exercise, carried out in collaboration with other security agencies, forms part of a broader initiative to restore order in public spaces and ensure adherence to immigration laws.

According to GIS officials, most of the detained individuals were foreign nationals who had no legal documentation and were engaging in street begging—an act that contravenes Ghana’s immigration and public order regulations.

Authorities expressed concern over the growing presence of organized begging rings, often involving children, which they believe pose a threat to public safety and national security.

The GIS reiterated its commitment to sanitizing the streets and upholding the integrity of the country’s borders by removing unauthorized persons exploiting the nation’s urban centers.

The Service has assured the public that due process will be followed in processing the detained individuals.

Meanwhile, the public has been urged to support lawful efforts aimed at safeguarding Ghana’s social and economic interests, with calls for stronger institutional coordination to maintain law and order in the capital and beyond.
