GES Reinstates PTAs In Senior High, Technical & STEM Schools Nationwide

In a renewed push to strengthen school-community collaboration, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially reinstated Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) across all Senior High, Technical, and STEM institutions.

The announcement, made in a letter dated July 17, 2025, and signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at GES, marks a significant policy reversal aimed at deepening stakeholder involvement in the country’s education system.

The directive follows a presidential instruction from John Dramani Mahama, emphasizing the critical role of PTAs in fostering inclusive governance, resource mobilization, and accountability in schools.

Heads of institutions have been tasked to immediately operationalize the reinstatement, restoring a structured platform for parents and teachers to collaborate in support of student development.

GES had previously suspended PTA operations in 2019, citing concerns over excessive levies and administrative conflicts that clashed with the Free SHS policy.

The rebranded “Parent Associations” excluded teachers from formal participation, leading to a disconnect between school management and parental oversight.

The reinstatement of PTAs is intended to Rebuild trust between schools and families, Enhance transparency in school decision-making, Mobilize community support for infrastructure and extracurricular programs, Foster accountability in student discipline and academic performance

GES has pledged to issue detailed operational guidelines to ensure PTAs function with transparency, uniformity, and efficiency.

The goal is to prevent past abuses while empowering PTAs to serve as constructive partners in education delivery.

Education analysts view the PTA revival as a strategic move to improve learning outcomes and restore community ownership of public education.

With parents and teachers working together, schools are expected to benefit from, Improved infrastructure maintenance, Stronger student mentorship programs, Better conflict resolution mechanisms, Increased civic participation in education policy

As GES prepares to roll out training for PTA leaders and school heads, the initiative is poised to reshape how Ghana’s schools engage with their communities ushering in a new era of collaborative governance.
