Galamsey — arguably the most talked about societal problem at the moment has emerged as a pervasive issue in Ghana characterized with environmental degradation, land and water resource depletion, health hazards and economic impacts.. The media, health professionals, the clergy, traditional leaders and many other influential groups of people have highlighted the deadly consequences of the said activity. These Individuals and groups into this due to their insatiable desire for wealth without thinking about the struggles in the country.
Several reports from the Ghana Water Company proves that the country is on the verge of importing water from other countries because the activities of these ‘Galamseyers’ have directly caused the country a huge mess.
Speaking at this year’s edition of the Ghana Bar Association’s annual conference, His Royal Majesty, Otumfour Osei Tutu II who has on several occasions spoken against the said activities once again emphasized on the urgency of the situation.
In his speech, he described the said activities as an environmental enemy of the country.
Few weeks ago, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, destooled three chiefs — the Gyaasihene, Akyeamehene and Baamuhene of Sabronum, stripping them off their titles and responsibilities.
The destoolment is a direct result of the trio’s involvement in illegal mining, commonly known as ‘galamsey‘, a practice that has plagued the region and drawn widespread condemnation.
The Asantehene’s bold move sends a strong message that the Asante kingdom will not tolerate such activities, which pose a significant threat to the environment and the well-being of its citizens. His Royal Majesty through the decision indirectly telling other traditional leaders, politicians to help fight the said challenge.
