Concerning the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, the Government of Ghana has announced plans to evacuate its citizens currently residing in Iran.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa made the announcement on Monday, June 16, emphasizing that the protection of Ghanaian lives is the primary motivation behind this urgent decision.
“The Mahama Administration has decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” Mr. Ablakwa stated in a social media post. He highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens in volatile situations.
As part of the evacuation measures, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect to guarantee the safety of diplomatic staff. The evacuation operation will be conducted through Iran’s land borders and will encompass all Ghanaian nationals in the country, including diplomats, students, professionals, and other residents.
In light of these developments, Mr. Ablakwa also announced that operations at the Ghanaian embassy in Tel Aviv would be minimized. He urged all Ghanaians in Israel to maintain close communication with the consular department as a precautionary measure.
The government’s swift action reflects its dedication to safeguarding its citizens during times of international crisis. As tensions rise in the region, many hope for a peaceful resolution that will allow for a safe return home for those affected.
