To address growing concerns over intermittent power supply and strengthen electricity distribution, Energy Minister Dr. John Jinapor has ordered the immediate deployment of 200 transformers across Ghana’s major cities.
In a decisive move to enhance Ghana’s power distribution network, Minister for Energy and Green Transition Dr. John Jinapor has directed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to urgently deploy 200 new transformers in major urban centers.
Announcing the directive at the opening of the 2025 West African Mining and Power Expo (WAMPEX) in Accra on Wednesday, May 28, the Minister said the deployment aims to ease pressure on the existing grid and curb localized power outages, which have sparked recent public concern.
Dr. Jinapor acknowledged that while electricity generation has stabilized and even enabled Ghana to export power to neighboring countries, the distribution infrastructure remains a key challenge. “What we need to do is to continue to improve the transmission network and the distribution network,” he stated.
He noted that the injection of the 200 transformers is critical to ensuring that stable power generation is matched by reliable delivery to consumers.
“I have granted approval to the ECG to, as a matter of urgency, inject about 200 new transformers in our major capital cities in order to ensure that we do not just generate power, but we’re able to transmit and distribute it effectively and efficiently,” he said.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to long-term investments in the power sector, emphasizing that reliable electricity is essential for both residential and industrial growth.
