In a devastating incident that has left the Lawra Senior High School community in mourning, seven students tragically lost their lives in a canoe accident on the Black Volta River on Saturday, June 14, 2025.
The students, who were part of the school’s cadet corps, were attempting to cross the river during a morning jogging session when their canoe capsized mid-stream.
Reports indicate that ten students were in the canoe at the time of the accident. While three students managed to survive and are currently receiving medical care, the bodies of the seven victims—comprising five girls and two boys—have been recovered by rescue teams from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Police Service, and Ghana Education Service.
Haruna Iddrisu, Ghana’s Minister of Education, expressed profound sorrow over the loss. In a statement released by Deputy Minister Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, he extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to student safety.
The Minister has instructed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service to convene an urgent meeting with Regional and District Directors of Education and the school’s headmaster to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
He emphasized that a full report from the Ghana Police Service is awaited to ensure accountability and prevent future tragedies.
“We share in the grief of the affected families and the entire school community. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this extremely difficult time,” stated Iddrisu.
As investigations continue, authorities remain committed to ensuring that such incidents do not recur in the future.
The tragic loss of these young lives serves as a stark reminder of the need for enhanced safety measures for students engaging in extracurricular activities.
