The Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Osman Abdulai Ayariga, has cautioned Ghanaian youth against the rising menace of drug abuse, describing it as a major barrier to national development and a threat to the country’s future leaders.

Speaking at YFM’s Area Code Jams held at the Legon City Mall on Saturday, October 25, Mr. Ayariga delivered a passionate address as part of his ongoing #RedMeansStop campaign against substance abuse. He warned young people not to fall for the misconception that drugs can enhance performance or increase focus.
“Drug use has no positive impact on anyone’s life. It destroys health, derails dreams, and prevents the youth from realizing their potential,” he stated.

Mr. Ayariga expressed worry that many young Ghanaians—who hold the potential to become future ministers, Members of Parliament, and even presidents are putting their lives and ambitions at risk through drug abuse.
He further highlighted that under President John Dramani Mahama’s Resetting Agenda, the government plans to invest heavily in national development projects. However, he cautioned that the increasing rate of drug abuse could compel the state to channel vital resources into rehabilitation efforts instead.
Mr. Ayariga appealed to the youth to make responsible life choices and live purpose-driven lives that contribute positively to the nation’s progress.
Following the event, the NYA CEO reinforced his message in a Facebook post, writing:
“We joined the team at YFM for their Area Code Blast to campaign against substance abuse amongst the youth of Ghana! Say No to Substance Abuse! #RedMeansStop!! #ShowWorking #OnGod.”
The YFM Area Code Jams brought together hundreds of young people for a night of music, entertainment, and awareness creation, serving as a dynamic platform to promote a drug-free and productive generation.
