Dr. Abiba Zakariah Appointed New Ag. Commissioner Of NIC

As acting Commissioner of the National Insurance Commission (NIC), President John Mahama has named Dr. Abiba Zakariah, a seasoned insurer and former Chief Operating Officer of WAICA Reinsurance Corporation.

On Monday, February 17, 2025, Dr. Zakariah officially began work after her appointment the previous week. She succeeds Michael Andoh, who has been serving as NIC’s acting commissioner since April 2023. Dr. Zakariah has worked in the insurance sector for over 20 years.

In addition, she founded Strategist Consortium, a managerial consulting organization, and serves as its managing director.

In 2024, she left her position as WAICA Reinsurance Corporation’s Group Chief Operating Officer. Members of the West African Insurance Companies Association own WAICA, which has offices worldwide.

A fellow of both the Institute of Risk Management Professionals of Ghana and the Chartered Insurance Institute of the United Kingdom, Dr. Zakariah is a chartered insurer. She graduated from the University of Ghana, Legon, with an MBA and a Bachelor of Science with Honors.

She graduated from the Swiss Management Center with a PhD in Management Studies. Prior to joining State Insurance Corporation, Dr. Zakaria began her career with SIC.

Dealing with the insurance penetration difficulty is Dr. Zakariah’s immediate challenge, according to several industry observers. It is anticipated that she will advocate for new legislative changes and provide incentives to insurance providers in order to address the issues.

Recently, several market participants have advocated for a reexamination of the insurance companies’ minimum capital requirements.
