The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to urgently reintroduce road tolls to help the Ministry of Roads and Highways raise funds for the maintenance and rehabilitation of deteriorating roads across the country.
In an interview with Kobbykyeinews reporter, Nana Antwi Boasiako, Chairman of the Association, William Osei, popularly known as Paa Willie, noted that although President Mahama has indicated plans to reintroduce tolls, there has been no clear timeline for implementation.
He stressed the importance of acting swiftly, especially now that fuel prices have dropped.
According to him, the current reduction in fuel prices presents an ideal opportunity to reintroduce the tolls, as drivers will be more willing to pay them.
He believes this approach will generate the necessary revenue for road repairs and improve the road network before fuel prices rise again.
Paa Willie further issued a warning, stating that if the government fails to act by the end of June, members of the Association will take matters into their own hands by mounting toll booths what he described as “kiosks” at key locations to collect road tolls themselves.
He emphasized that the move is not political but a desperate attempt by drivers to see real improvement in road conditions that continue to affect their daily operations.
