Cape Coast Mayor Marks Seven Months in Office with Media Encounter, Outlines Key Achievements and Development Agenda

The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) Hall on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, hosted a successful Media Encounter addressed by the Mayor of Cape Coast, Hon. George Justice Arthur, as he marked exactly seven (7) months in office as the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE).

The engagement formed part of the Mayor’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and open governance, providing the media and the general public with a detailed account of achievements recorded within the period, ongoing development projects, and the Assembly’s strategic vision for the growth of the metropolis.

Market Infrastructure and Economic Development

In his address, Hon. George Justice Arthur highlighted significant interventions in market infrastructure aimed at improving trading conditions and boosting the local economy.

He announced the planned construction of a GHC37.8 million modern market complex, which will include a day care centre, police post, fire station, lockable stores, and a lorry park. The project is expected to decongest major trading centres and enhance safety and convenience for traders and commuters.

The Mayor also revealed that GHC11 million is required to complete the Anaafo Market project, assuring stakeholders that the Assembly is actively exploring funding options to ensure its completion.

Revenue Mobilization and Financial Performance

On revenue generation, Hon. Arthur disclosed that the Assembly mobilized GHC650,000 from the Kotokuraba Market between June and November 2025. He attributed the performance to improved revenue collection systems, accountability measures, and increased stakeholder cooperation.

He reiterated that strengthening Internally Generated Funds (IGF) remains a priority to support development without excessive dependence on central government allocations.

Transport Regulation and Urban Management

As part of measures to improve traffic management and public safety, the Mayor announced that about 1,200 tricycles (Pragyia) operating within the metropolis have been registered and documented.

He explained that the registration exercise is intended to regulate operations, reduce indiscipline on the roads, and integrate tricycle transport into the city’s planning framework.

Sanitation Enforcement and Environmental Health

Addressing sanitation challenges, Hon. George Justice Arthur announced plans to establish sanitation cohorts to enforce environmental bylaws and ensure compliance with communal labour directives.

He stressed that sanitation is a shared responsibility and warned that residents who deliberately refuse to participate in communal labour or violate sanitation regulations would face appropriate sanctions.

Health and Education Infrastructure

The Mayor also provided updates on critical health and education infrastructure projects being undertaken across the metropolis.

According to him, the Assembly has commenced and supported the construction of Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds in selected communities to improve access to primary healthcare, particularly for underserved areas.

In the education sector, Hon. Arthur disclosed that new school buildings are being constructed, while existing facilities are undergoing rehabilitation to create a conducive learning environment for both pupils and teachers. These interventions, he noted, align with the Assembly’s broader objective of strengthening social infrastructure and human capital development.

Strengthening Media Engagement and Accountability

Hon. George Justice Arthur emphasized the importance of the media as partners in development, accountability, and good governance. He encouraged journalists to continue engaging constructively with the Assembly and to support efforts to educate the public on government policies and development initiatives.

The media encounter further strengthened the working relationship between the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly and the media, reaffirming their shared commitment to transparency and responsible governance.

The Mayor concluded by reaffirming his dedication to inclusive leadership and sustainable development, expressing optimism that with the support of stakeholders and residents, Cape Coast will continue on a path of steady progress.
