BREAKING NEWS: Defence Minister, Other Top Officials Burnt Beyond Recognition In Tragic Military Helicopter Crash

Ghana has been thrown into national mourning following a devastating military helicopter crash that has claimed the lives of eight high-profile individuals, including the Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah.

The tragic incident occurred on the morning of Wednesday, August 6, 2025, near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.

According to military sources and eyewitnesses, the aircraft caught fire shortly after takeoff and went down under unclear circumstances, crashing in a densely forested area near Adansi Akrofuom.

Confirmed fatalities include:

  3. Alhaji Muniru Mohammed – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  4. Dr Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
  5. Mr Samuel Aboagye – Former Parliamentary Candidate
  6. Squadron Leader Peter
  7. Flying Officer Twum Ampadu
  8. Sergeant Ernest Addo

The flight, which reportedly operates regularly between Accra and Obuasi, was on an official government assignment.

All eight individuals on board were confirmed dead at the scene, with some bodies reportedly burnt beyond recognition due to the intensity of the fire.

Emergency response teams, including military rescue units, the Ghana National Fire Service, and local volunteers, were deployed immediately to the site to contain the situation and retrieve the bodies.

The government has expressed deep sorrow and promised a full-scale investigation into the cause of the crash.

This tragic event marks one of the darkest days in Ghana’s recent history, as the nation mourns the sudden and heartbreaking loss of key leaders and security personnel.
