Ambassador Higazy Urges African Unity to Protect Trade and Security

Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Higazy, former Assistant Foreign Minister of Egypt and a security expert, has called on African countries to work together to protect peace, trade, and development across the continent.

Speaking in an interview with Atinka TV’s Ebenezer Madugu after delivering lectures at the 62nd Union of African Journalists (UAJ) training session in Cairo, Ambassador Higazy emphasized that stability in Africa is inseparable from the security of key maritime routes, particularly the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the Red Sea, and the Suez Canal, through which nearly 90 percent of Europe’s trade passes.

According to him, any conflict in this region could affect Africa, the Middle East, and the global economy. He stressed the need to protect African nation-states such as Somalia and to avoid political tension in nearby regions like Yemen.

“The stability of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea is directly linked to the stability of Africa as a whole,” Higazy said.

He also spoke about the need for African countries to cooperate more closely. He suggested linking African ports, building better roads, and improving transport systems across the continent. He added that Africa can benefit from sharing water and energy resources, especially in the Nile Basin.

On security, he explained that African countries already work together through regional military structures, however, more effort is needed to share information, train together, and respond quickly to threats that cross borders.
