The operation against illegal mining activities, the Special Police Anti-Galamsey Taskforce from the National Police Headquarters has arrested 17 suspects in Samreboi, a town in the Western Region of Ghana.
The operation took place on May 25, 2025, as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, also known locally as “galamsey.”
The suspects include seven Chinese nationals and ten Ghanaians, highlighting the international dimension of the illegal mining crisis in the country.
Following their arrest, all individuals were swiftly transported to Accra to assist with further investigations.
The taskforce has announced that it is intensifying its operations in the Aowin Tano and Tano Anwia areas near Enchi.
Authorities are focusing on identifying additional persons of interest and ensuring the protection of critical forest reserves that are often threatened by illegal mining activities.
The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to supporting national efforts aimed at eradicating illegal mining. “We are resolute in our mission to protect our natural resources and ensure the safety of our communities,” stated a spokesperson for the police.
As the anti-galamsey operations continue, there is hope that these efforts will lead to more arrests and a significant reduction in illegal mining activities in affected regions.
The government’s ongoing commitment to tackling this issue reflects a broader strategy to safeguard Ghana’s environmental heritage while promoting sustainable development.
