Fourteen construction workers were rescued after a three-storey building under construction collapsed at the Roman Ridge Engineering Center in Accra on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the incident occurred between a 10-storey high-rise apartment and the Ghana Institute of Engineering. The collapsed structure was reportedly being undertaken by Fabrico Builders.
The GNFS received a distress call at 12:18 p.m., and a rescue team from the National Headquarters, led by Assistant Divisional Officer II Ankrah, arrived at the scene at 12:29 p.m. By the time of their arrival, all 14 affected persons — all male construction workers — had already been rescued and transported to the 37 Military Hospital and Ridge Hospital for treatment.
Eyewitnesses reported that the victims sustained varying degrees of injuries. Fortunately, no fatalities have been recorded as of press time.
Authorities say the cause of the collapse is still under investigation. Officials from the GNFS and relevant engineering bodies are working to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.
In the meantime, the site manager has been directed to suspend all construction activities pending the outcome of the investigation. The GNFS has also emphasized the need for full compliance with building and safety regulations at the site.
Further updates are expected as investigations continue.
