President John Dramani Mahama, alongside Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and the government, has expressed profound appreciation to Ghanaians and the international community for the overwhelming support received following the devastating helicopter crash of August 6, 2025, which claimed eight lives.
The presidency issued a statement expressing deep gratitude to the people of Ghana and the international community for the immense support following the tragic incident that claimed eight lives, including two ministers of state.
The crash occurred in the dense forest near Sikaman in the Adansi Akrofuom area of the Ashanti Region, where Ghana’s defence minister Edward Omane Boamah and environment minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed were among the dead.
The government has been deeply moved by the outpouring of sympathy and solidarity from across the nation and beyond Ghana’s borders.
The African Union Commission, ECOWAS and the United Nations conveyed condolences to President Mahama, the bereaved families, and the people of Ghana, demonstrating the international community’s solidarity during this difficult period.
Following the tragedy, President Mahama suspended all activities and declared three days of national mourning, while Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and other top officials visited the families of the victims.
This gesture underscored the government’s commitment to honoring the memory of those lost in service to the nation.
The eight victims included high-ranking officials and military personnel who were on their way to Obuasi for an anti-illegal mining operation when their aircraft disappeared from radar.
Among the victims were Flight Officer Twum Ampadu, Squadron Leader Peter Anala, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, alongside Samuel Aboagye, former National Democratic Congress Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East.
In response to the tragedy, President Mahama announced posthumous promotions for three Ghana Armed Forces officers who lost their lives and established a dedicated fund to support the children of all eight victims.
This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring the families of the fallen heroes receive ongoing support.
The helicopter crash has united Ghanaians across political and social divides, with citizens from all walks of life offering prayers, condolences, and support to the affected families.
Religious organizations, civil society groups, and ordinary citizens have contributed to relief efforts and participated in memorial services honoring the victims.
The burial ceremony at the Military Cemetery in Tse Addo brought together President Mahama, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang, senior government officials, the military high command, bereaved families, and mourners from across the country, reflecting the national unity in grief and remembrance.
The government has launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash to prevent similar incidents in the future.
